Avant Garde Theater

Survey of the history, principles, and methods of the Avant-Garde movement in theater, from 1890 to 1960. Emphasis is placed upon writings, movements, and methods: from Alfred Jarry to Edward Albee, Theater of cruelty to modern variations, Meyerhold’s biomechanics to Grotowski’s voice work. Class activities include readings, discussions, exercises, and performances.

Careers Workshop

An exploration and assimilation of successful marketing techniques needed to secure employment in theater or related segments of the entertainment industry. Students will also learn and demonstrate financial literacy, interview techniques, and career planning. This class will also explore theatre-related career paths.

Dramatic Imagination: Intro to Design

Study of the vocabulary of analytical tools that theatrical designers use. The student will study color theory and picture plane composition, and discover how the principles of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design impact the theatre artist.

Intermediate Stagecraft                                                                    

This course refines the skills and techniques necessary for proficiency at the intermediate level of technical production, including the construction of scenery for the stage, rigging, standard technical theatre vocabulary, and safe work habits. The Objective of this course is to prepare the students for work in technical theater in a summer stock or other professional theater, specifically focusing on positions within the scene shop. Taught standard practices and the preparation of application materials to assist in job placement.

 

Intro to Scenic Painting                                                                     

Introduction to scenery and scenery painting practices for the theatre. This class is designed to teach you the functionality of a Paint Deck, hierarchy and responsibilities of personnel, shop etiquette, and a variety of paint techniques. By the completion of this segment you will have a well-rounded understanding of how a Paint Deck works, its relation to other departments, and the specific needs of a Scenic Artist.

Lighting and Sound Production

A lecture / laboratory course dealing with the elements of stage lighting and sound. Topics include mechanics of basic electricity, including ideas of workplace safety, understanding of instrumentation, distribution, and control, including computer systems.

Participation in Production

This course is for students participating in theatre productions in a technical capacity. Practicum Course. Instructor of Record serves as the Technical Supervisor of productions and provides assessment of student’s production work.

Professional Theater Tour

A trip to New York or London to attend professional theatrical productions.  Airfare, hotel and restaurant expenses are in addition to normal tuition.

Stage Management and Play Production

Study of the duties and responsibilities of a stage manager through all phases of the theatre in relation to the production of a play.  Practical experience in technical organization and management of a production.

Theatre Appreciation

Presents a general approach to the art of theatre and is designed to develop the student’s knowledge and appreciation of the theatre arts through a study of the history of drama and theatre.

Theater History I

Survey of the history of the theatre from Greece to 1800.  Concerned with theatre as a product of social conditions of various cultures and periods.

Theater History II

Survey of the history of the theatre from 1800 to the present.  Concerned with theatre as a product of social conditions of various cultures and periods.
