Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy is centered on the classroom as a place for curiosity, practice, and performance and assessment. In the various classes under my purview, I focus on three methods to engage students: direct instruction, question/answer learning, and practical application. These methods derive from Bloom’s Taxonomy coupled with Gagne’s 9 Levels of Learning. With Gagne’s 9 Levels, students engage in a process of lecture, practice, and assessment. Lectures are presented as a progression of layered ideas and information recall. Demonstration of skill and understanding is engaged in class activities and discussions. Assessment is made with emphasis placed on self-reflection, and inductive and deductive reasoning. Assignments vary in modes and structure, promoting varied learning styles.
